Ghislain Potvlieghe
Wie over orgelmuziek in Vlaanderen spreekt, kan moeilijk om de naam van Ghislain Potvlieghe heen. Al in de jaren 1960 publiceerde hij artikels over onze orgels in de streek en verder, in tijdschriften zoals ‘Eigen Schoon en De Brabander’ en ‘De Brabantse Folklore’. Daarnaast bracht hij ook al een aantal eigen werken uit over orgels, o.a. ‘Orgelkunst in Vlaanderen’, een uitgave van het Mercatorfonds. Hij is een autoriteit, wat kennis over deze prachtige, maar vaak vergeten muziekinstrumenten betreft. Vorig jaar konden wij hem strikken om over onze vier Gooikse orgels te schrijven in ons tijdschrift ‘Gooik’. Het werden vier uitgebreide stukken over twee Loret-orgels, één Anneessens en één Le Royer-orgel, het pronkstuk van onze gemeente, dat zich bevindt in de kerk van Leerbeek.
Dit boek is een bewerkte versie van deze vier artikels, in een specifieke opstelling, met meerdere aanvullingen en ook werden nog heel wat nieuwe foto’s (van Jean-Paul De Loecker) bijgevoegd. De teksten zijn geschreven in een verhalende stijl en evenzeer voor de professioneel als voor de liefhebber bedoeld. Ze proberen op een luchtige, maar toch enigszins kritische toon, de lezer wegwijs te maken in een specifieke materie die de kerkorgels toch zijn. Ze laten de lezer op een heel andere manier kijken naar die soms magistrale, soms lieflijke instrumenten die zich achteraan in de kerken van Groot- Gooik bevinden. Ze staan daar wat verloren, soms helemaal naar de kant geduwd, maar dit werk van Ghislain Potvlieghe haalt ze terug naar voor, wil ze opnieuw naar de mensen brengen, voor wie ze bestemd waren/zijn. Bekijk ze goed op de vele detailfoto’s, die ons een ander beeld geven van deze instrumenten. Lees de teksten en leer bij hoe en wanneer deze instrumenten in onze kerken zijn gekomen, van wie ze zijn en wat deze mensen betekend hebben in de wereld van het kerkorgel. Dan zal ons doel bereikt zijn: weer interesse opwekken voor soms eeuwenoude ‘muziekmeubels’, die we jarenlang hebben laten verkommeren en waarvoor zovele kenners ons benijden, omdat deze te vinden zijn in onze kleine Pajotse gemeente.

Hij gaat naar eigen zeggen al naar de negentig maar levert met dit boek een doorwrocht overzicht af van de kerkorgels in het voor de gelegenheid iets verruimde Pajottenland, in een (kleur)rijke taal om duimen en vingers bij af te likken. Je kunt al een half mensenleven lang iedere zondag ter kerke trekken en in dit boek alsnog op beschrijvingen van details botsen die je al die jaren niet eens had opgemerkt in je eigen parochiekerk. Wie dit boek leest, wil ter plaatse gaan kijken… en luisteren.
Ghislain Potvlieghe schreef geen gortdroge opsomming van instrumenten met hun eigenschappen, wel een persoonlijke, doorleefde beschrijving van orgels, van de kerk waarin ze staan en van het landschap waarin die kerk prijkt. Hij lijkt met een terugwerkende kracht van eeuwen mee te kijken onder het schedeldak van opdrachtgevers en bouwers maar ook van lieden die het gebouwde achteraf verknoeiden. Want dit boek is tegelijk een ondubbelzinnige aanklacht tegen de manier waarop in het Pajottenland een aantal orgels – voor Vlaanderen soms unieke exemplaren, zoals dat van Bellingen en dat van Leerbeek – met de wanstaltige rugzak der transformatie wordt opgezadeld. Het is een dringende uitnodiging, aan al wie die handschoen opnemen durft, om deze prachtige stukken muzikaal en architectonisch erfgoed in eer te houden en waar nodig ‘tot op het bot’ te herstellen.
De cd bij dit boek is nergens afzonderlijk te koop en illustreert met speciaal voor dit boek gemaakte opnamen (augustus 2016) de kwaliteit van een aantal orgels die gelukkig wel naar waarde zijn geschat door degenen die er verantwoordelijkheid voor dragen. De instrumenten zelf en de muziek die Sarah Copriau erop uitvoert vormen als het ware een muzikale reis van oude tot hedendaagse muziek en illustreren daarmee de veelzijdigheid van het Pajottenlandse orgellandschap.
